The Police Gazette - On the Lam or in the Game?

The Police Gazette was a newspaper in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia issued by the police department giving descriptions of crimes and criminals, lists of deserters, etc. Unfortunately I didn't find all to view for free, but they have some at Ancestry and Find My Past. There are digital issues that can be viewed online free at Tasmania Government Archives. UK and Ireland gazettes can be viewed with a subscription to British Newspapers or pay-per-page at Last Chance to Read, who has over 700 issues. You can also go to the National Archives, UK or to other countries' government archives or state libraries.

Some issues of the National Police Gazette, NY published in New York since 1845 can be found online.

Then you have the Police Gazette which was a popular American men's magazine. It published articles with wonderful illustrations about American Boxing and biographies, world sporting events, sports calendars and records, crime stories, and full page Pin-up Girls!  

Perhaps you will find one of your ancestors... either on the lam or in the game!

My 2x great grandfather, George King of Loddiswell and Woodleigh in Devon, chucked it all when he was 30 years old, and moved his young family to Canada. He is the only one of his family to do so, as several of his other siblings moved to Australia.

Brothers Thomas, Henry and Clement, as well as their sister Mary with her husband Thomas Symons Blake, made the move with government assisted passage.

Of course the Gold Rush may have had something to do with wanting to immigrate to Australia also.  This is what must have enticed Thomas, who became a miner in Victoria.

Summer Camping

This is the time of year when parents pack up the car with kids, dogs, tents, sleeping bags and an assortment of camping paraphernalia and head out of the city.

When my Dad was young his family went tent camping on the Maine coast just south of Portland at a place called Bayview. They went there for several summers and created lots of fond memories. They set up two tents with a dining area in between.

When I was young our family used to go tent camping at Meacham Lake in the Adirondacks. Either family friends or my mothers parents would sometimes camp with us. What comes to mind is the smell of the canvas tent, the campfires that kept the bugs away, and the raccoon paw prints on the table in the mornings.

Lay of the Land

People emigrated to make a better life for themselves and their children, and for a lot of people that meant land. For budding countries such as the United States, Canada and Australia more people working the land and bearing children meant prosperity for the country. Some farmers as they began to prosper bought more land to add to their holdings and pass on to their children.

Land grants were also given to soldiers for appreciation of their service, also a way of paying them, as land was plentiful, money was not.

I have found a few of my ancestors on Land Grant indexes, which give a hint where and what time period to look for the actual documents. Right place... right time... Next would be to look it up in the archives to get all the details, and to be sure it is indeed my ancestor.
