Society of Colonial Wars

"Colonial Wars: a quarterly magazine" was published in Massachusetts by the Society of Colonial Wars and contains pedigree charts as well as membership lists.

"The Society of Colonial Wars is an hereditary society composed of men who trace their descents from forebears who, in military, naval, or civil positions of high trust and responsibility, by acts or counsel, assisted in the establishment, defense, and preservation of the mainland American colonies of Great Britain."

Many states have a Society of Colonial Wars and have published their own registers and yearbooks. Using the link below, look in the left hand column for "creator" and click on "more", you will get a popup list of societies in different states then can see just the ones for the state you want.

Colonial Magazine

The Colonial Magazine and versions thereof were published in London. Check each issue in the volumes.

Fisher's Colonial Magazine has Obituary notices in each issue, as well as other items, including where all the troops are stationed and news throughout the colonies. Check the list of contents at the beginning.

Fisher's Colonial Magazine Vol 1, 1844

The Simmonds’s Colonial Magazine has lists of BMD at the end of each issue. In Vol 3, 1844, I found a Supplemental list of Immigrants on board the Appolline from London, via Plymouth to Hobart Town (AU) 1 Oct 1842. The list gives immigrants' names, their wages, their trade and the name of their employer.

In the East Indian magazines look for Indian News. This may include BMD, military appointments and promotions, removals and forloughs, civil appointments, etc.

Monthly Magazines

Thee are so many types of magazines today. I used to get gift subscriptions to magazines with children stories from my aunts. I give monthly magazines to my grandchildren for Christmas according to their preferences - cooking, photography, puzzles etc. They love them and it is a gift that lasts all year long.

Among the types of magazines printed in the 1700-1900's are political/ literary. They give the news of the past month on science, arts, politics, etc. Some have names of subscribers, and some have births and deaths of notables. These magazines became especially popular to immigrants who wanted news of their homeland.

When my gg uncle James Mavor died, his notary sent my grandfather, a beneficiary, a clipping from a paper - Weekly Scotsman - so he must have subscribed to it. I see it is available for viewing at the National Library of Australia.
