Surnames

My ancestors lived in England, Scotland and Ireland.
I made a list of all my family SURNAMES.
Are any of these names on your tree?

I put a "d" for lines I have developed quite far, a "u" for mostly undeveloped and an "s" beside the names for which I am stuck in my research. There are so many with a "u" I will never run out of ancestors to research. I have my work cut out for me!

  1. An interesting list, Dianne. We have been in touch on our common Lancashire names and unfortunately cannot link our respective Dansons. Are you using Scotland’s People website fir your Scottish Ancestors? Regional Archive Centres such as Midlothian are very helpful. I live in the Scottish Borders, just south of Midlothian.

    1. Hi Sue. Sorry, I meant to get back to you then it slipped my mind with so much going on here.
I have solved a few mysteries using ScotlandsPeople, and ScotlandsPlaces.
I wasn’t going to take a dna test because my lines were pretty well developed. But I was stuck in 1800 Peterhead with my Mavor and Sangster family. So I decided to do it (took four tries!) at first I was disappointed because all the matches were me helping them. Then, as more people tested I found lots of Sangster matches (tho no real connection, like us probably) and solved two Mavor mysteries.
Did you join Lancashire Family History Society? Find it helpful?

  3. Hi Diane, my search on Adam Tait has lead me to your website. I am researching the Blair family. Charles Blair, goldsmith in Edinburgh had by his first wife Margaret Pennycook a daughter Mary who married Adam Tait. Both Mary and Adam as her husband are mentioned in the Testament of Charles Blair 1759. My research has been going on for many years as I am researching a family by the name Tyrie who were Lairds of Drumkilbo, in Forfarshire. Isobel Tyrie dau. of Sir Thomas Tyrie of Drumkilbo and Glasclune married James Blair of Lethendy c. 1656, Minute of Agreement on the contemplation of that event dated 1754 was never completed but it is assumed the couple married between the 2 dates as by 1657 James Blair is recorded in a deed as being the spouse of Isobel Tyrie, only dau. of the deceased Sir Thomas Tyrie of Drumkilbo, knight. Later in the records Isabel and James are in prison in Dundee and the Court of Session record pleas record that the couple had 10 young children. One of those may have been Charles the goldsmith as the book with the goldsmith genealogies in it states he was the son of Isobel and James Blair of Glasclune. James Blair died 1688 and Isobel in 1713. She is buried in Greyfriars Cemetery in Edinburgh. They lost their ownership of the Glasclune estate due to debts they made themself trying to pay off debts inherited. For a short time a son, Captain Adam Blair had the signature of the lands of Glasclune but this was striped from him in favour of the grandson of their main creditor, another Blair. Other children were James Blair, Litster, Burgess in Edinburgh (apprentice 1695), marr Elizabeth Lamb in Edinburgh in 1706, he died 1714 and Isobel Blair who married a Bryce Blair, Indweller in Edinburgh, in 1715. I am interested to know if you have any further information on Adam Tait and his wife Mary Blair.
    Regards
    Anne Wilson

    1. Hi Anne. My ancestor was James Tait who married Eupham Blair and had son Adam Tait. This I got from the book Edinburgh Goldsmiths II at..

I also learned more about Adam from the books about the Jacobites written by Gavin Wood. I wrote about this in a post in June 2014.

I did not research more about Adam as my line is from James’ second wife Katherine Lamont.
