Canada 150 - Furniture Dealers and Undertakers

During our country's 150th anniversary celebration of confederation I will write posts titled Canada 150 with a link to a publication or website I find that may help you tell the story of your Canadian ancestors.
Click on the Canada 150 label on the right or at the bottom to see all the posts.

Today I have for you...

Canadian Furniture World and The Undertaker

The first issue was published in September 1911. The binder for 1911 holds all 1912 issues as well.  Thereafter each binder holds a year of issues.  Check each month. Look for ancestor names throughout, but especially in the column titled Among the Retailers and Knobs of News.

In the Undertaker department, the column Professional Notes tells news of ancestors in the business.

In the issues are also directories of furniture makers, undertakers and associated trades.

  1. Thank you very much for this resource. My great great grandmother's brothers were undertakers and furniture makers. I have had trouble finding out much information about their parents and I am crossing my fingers and my toes in hopes that I will find some information here.

    1. Excellent! I hope you find something.
My great grandfather was a carpenter and coffin maker in a small town, so just one-off enough to not be in any book. Boooo!

  2. I discovered these magazines at Archive.org a year or so ago. They are a goldmine of information and I'm so grateful they have been scanned. I am researching Waterloo County/Region undertakers and have found wonderful ads for related businesses (casket manufacturers, horse-drawn and motor hearse builders). Knobs of News and Professional Notes have provided details about some of the businesses that I didn't know (a new building, when a business started) and wouldn't have found elsewhere. Marion Roes
