No Luck of the Irish 4 - Convicts

There have been more publications for Ireland uploaded to Internet Archive. These have to do with returns of convicts and prisoners.

One or two may appear in another of my lists, but this one is more complete.

The return of convicts discharged 1837 has lists by county, with name, offence, sentence and date of discharge.

Queen’s County Convicts Discharged 1835-1837

Some have more information, like this one: locality, name, address, occupation, by whom committed, cause of committal, date of committal, date of commitment, medical report, term of commitment, when term expires.

The Quebec Jail Association

First Annual Report, 1830

The Quebec Jail Association was established to bring education to prisoners at the Quebec Jail. The association paid the teachers' salaries and did other good works through donations and subscriptions. A subscription of 5s a year was all that was needed to become a member of the association.

The report gives the conditions in the jail and states that their request to the Quebec Legislature for assistance and recognition of the gaol conditions fell on deaf ears. The association also tried to establish a House of Industry to employ prisoners on discharge.

The fifth annual report tells that in the jail during the winter they were able to "erect a loom and machinery for the manufacture of coarse hempen cloth, which is now in full operation." Voluntary employment was a successful endeavor that gave the prisoners a bit of money to support themselves until they could find work.

Maybe the provincial government did not sit up and take notice, but other prison associations did.

Canada Prisons

I have tooted the Sessional Papers of the Dominion of Canada before, they are rich with information about the country at that time and of our ancestors. The Sessional Papers contain documents tabled to the House of Commons, mostly by Government Departments, but also by Royal Commissions, Task Forces and Census. Some years the reports of different departments are terse, other years they are more detailed with names, addresses, wages, dates, etc. These are not just names of government employees (eg PostMasters, Indian Affairs, etc) but also people or companies granted certain licenses or paid for work done.

At the front of each set of papers, go past the Alphabetical Index to the List of Contents, tells you what is covered in each volume for that year, so you know where to look. Not all reports were printed, so going through the paper you may find some of the Numbers of the volume missing. Some of the unpublished documents can be found at places like Queen's University Library in Kingston, Ontario.
